Scope and Contents

The Robert Moran papers and scores reflect the full scope of Moran's compositional activities, and include scores, sketches, libretti, photographs, recordings, and extensive correspondence. These materials are organized into 10 series.

  • Biography. Materials giving information about Moran’s life, not necessarily associated with particular works or events. An important part of this series is the set of wall calendars for the years 1968-2003, detailing Moran’s daily activities and appointments
  • Musical works. Scores, recordings, publicity and other materials related to individual compositions
  • Correspondence
  • Photographs. Photographs that cannot be linked to particular compositions or events
  • Scrapbooks. Large-format books covering the years 1968 to 2001 (with a few gaps) containing clippings, programs, photographs and other materials
  • Sketchbooks. Blank books into which Moran has inserted musical sketches and other materials
  • Programs, posters, clippings and notes. This series contains items related to performances and other events that cannot be tied to individual compositions.
  • Interviews. Published and recorded interviews given by Moran. The series includes a set of recordings made with Moran’s astrologer, Julie Winter, in the years 1976 to 1984.
  • Works of others. Scores and other materials related to compositions not by Moran, and writings by others.
  • Restricted materials. Materials sealed by Moran, and not to be made available until 2050.

    Arrangement Note

    Musical compositions are arranged by title. (Where more than one title is available, this finding aid uses the title found in Moran's web site.)

    Some of the voluminous correspondence is arranged by correspondent, but most of it (chiefly printouts of e-mail messages) is arranged by date.

    Method of Acquisition

    Received from Robert Moran in a number of installments beginning in 1979.
