Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Claude Barnett Research Collection consists of news clippings, photographs, and newsletters pertaining to African affairs during the 1950s and 1960s. The collection was assembled by Claude Barnett, director of the Associated Negro Press, a wire organization serving black American newspapers, and the World News Service, which provided similar service to African newspapers from 1960 until 1963.

The first and largest segment of the collection is made up of news clippings from American (including black American), European, and African publications. These are supplemented by a small number of press releases and newsletters. Most of this material is arranged alphabetically by African country; smaller alphabetical files of organizations and of subjects follow.

The second major category of material in the collection is photographs. Primarily publicity photos relating to Ghana, many are identified by attached press captions. Photographs concerning Nigeria and Liberia and miscellaneous photographs are also included.

The collection concludes with a small file of newsletters arranged alphabetically by issuing agency.
