From the Collection: The Humphrey Winterton Collection of East African photographs is comprised of about 6,500 photographs organized in 75 primary collections of separate albums, scrapbooks or loose collections. Primary collections range from a single photograph to a set of several photograph albums plus envelopes of loose photographs.

Historic Notes

An unusual album recording mission life, schools and pupils; possibly compiled by a missionary with the Africa Inland Mission or A.I.M. Many of the photographs depict the Kijabe Mission Station in Kenya, including conference photographs from 1915-1917. Included are three interesting images of a train accident on the Uganda Railway.

1 album (1 album, 25 p., 24 x 32 cm.) : Oblong quarto (24 x 32 cm.), containing 134 silver prints snapshots, of various dimensions, together with a few postcards of East Africa, mostly captioned but some of the captions have faded; grey paper covers, a little worn at the spine.

The Kijabe Mission Station, C.E. Hurlburt, and the Downing family, all depicted in this album, are mentioned in Chapter III of D.M. Miller's Central Africa revisited : a 16,000 mile tour throughout the fields of the Africa Inland Mission in Kenya, Tanganyika, Uganda, Congo, Sudan and Egypt. London : Africa Inland Mission, in association with Marshall, Morgan & Scott, 1938. In addition, some of the missionaries depicted in the photographs as children, and some children of the adults depicted, have oral histories on file at the Archives of the Billy Graham Center, Wheaton, Illinois
