Scope and Contents

The cards were published by Underwood & Underwood Publishers, New York, London, Ottawa, and Kansas. On the right margin of each card is the logo for Sun Sculpture Works and Studios, Arlington, N.J., and Westwood, N.J. Each card is printed with an English caption on the recto and marked with a copyright for Underwood & Underwood dated 1909. All but a few of the cards include a caption on the verso in English, French, German, Spanish, Swedish, and Russian. Most of the verso captions differ slightly from the recto captions. Several of the cards include substantial explanatory text on the verso, each citing Notes of Travel, No. 44, c.1909 by Underwood & Underwood.

The captions printed on the cards almost all include an indication of the region in which they were taken, such as "East Africa" or "E. Africa". Presumably to save space and avoid redundancy, the inventory transcriptions do not include that information. This particular discrepancy has not been noted here for individual captions, which are presented as they appear on the cards, because it will not interfere with discovery and because the inventory captions are readily available.
