The album may have been compiled by an official of S.D. & E. Co., which is mentioned in a few of the captions (see nos. 20 & 27). Note that S.D. & E. Co. is also referred to as S.D. Co. throughout the captions. It seems to have been a general trading company with stations along the Nile and to have built its own steamers. It is highly unusual to find an album of photographs devoted entirely to this region.
