Scope and Contents

This collection comprises 504 domestic and international airline and cruise ships menus, dating from 1938 to 2021. In addition to the physical description of the menus, certain components of the records may be of special interest to researchers. The records provide (if available) the flight’s origin, its destination, travel class, type of vessel, and trip’s date. The record includes the donor’s name and transcribed notes found on the menu regarding flight, service, food, and wine. Some menus were designed by well-known artists.

Abstract

Robert M. Behr worked in the travel industry for many years. He was a retail travel agent and worked for Alaska Airlines at Oakland International Airport. Behr taught travel classes at Vista Community College, worked for American Express travel related services, and was a tour guide in South America. Since 1978 Behr collects airline memorabilia, both ephemera and dining service items. This collection comprises 504 domestic and international airline and cruise ships menus, dating from 1938 to 2021, spanning 9 boxes.

Arrangement

The menus are arranged alphabetically by carrier name and chronologically within each series. Boxes 1 through 9 contain airline menus; cruise ship menus are located thereafter in box 9.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

This collection was donated to the Northwestern University Transportation Library by Robert M. Behr in November 2021 (accession number TL 2021-3).
