Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Clark T. Hinman Papers fill one half-size box and span the years 1846 to 1976. The bulk of the papers include biographical excerpts regarding Hinman, newspaper clippings regarding Hinman, and correspondence regarding, but not directly connected to Hinman.

Biographical Materials include excerpts from books and essays describing Hinman’s life. Much of the material is photocopied from books pertaining to Evanston or Northwestern.

A Clippings file contains newspaper articles dating from 1854-1875, including obituaries for Hinman, articles written about the history of Evanston and Northwestern including Hinman, and articles about subsequent generations of Hinman relatives attending Northwestern.

One file contains an original sermon given by Hinman on April 5th, 1846, on "The Appropriate Character and Responsibilities of Young Men."

Correspondence relating to Hinman spans the years 1898 to 1976 and consists of sporadic correspondence, mostly relating to locating historic items related to Hinman, specifically pictures of Clark and Martha Hinman. While one picture exists of Clark, no known picture exists of Martha.
