Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Charles Francis Hunter Papers are comprised of biographical and teaching materials, as well as items related to committee and administrative activities at Northwestern.

The biographical materials consist primarily of news releases and clippings. The teaching materials include assignment sheets, exam questions, and other items related directly or indirectly to Hunter's courses. A few student papers are also included. The committee and administrative materials relate to radio, television, and the fine arts.

Description of the Addition: The material in these two additional boxes consists primarily of correspondence in nine categories: personal, general, graduate students, faculty, positions, speakers, telephone bills, budget and purchasing, and the Midwest Program on Airborne Television Instruction. Most of this material is comprised of carbon copies of letters written by Hunter, arranged chronologically by date.

The personal correspondence includes acknowledgements of gifts, requests to write articles and related correspondence, appointments to and resignations from various committees and organizations, and letters of a personal nature to and from former students and colleagues.

The general correspondence deals with a broad range of subjects including summer and special symposia, undergraduates and potential applicants, letters to former students, association activities, and other teaching and administrative duties.

The graduate students folders mainly contain letters of application with score letters from Hunter discussing individual programs and projects.

The “Positions” folders include letters to former students advising them of new positions and letters to employers suggesting candidates for openings.

The guest speakers folder mainly includes letters Hunter wrote to various supervisors or administrators concerning their excellent presentations before his classes.

The folders labeled “telephone bills” and “budget and purchasing” each contain a small number of items.

The Midwest Program on Airborne Television Instruction (MPATI) folders include materials related to this joint program of instruction primarily for elementary and high schools. Letters deal with demonstrations, regional activities, equipment, personal, and committees.

The correspondence portrays Hunter as an individual deeply interested in each student and eager to develop the best program for both the academic and career phases of each student's life. He expected the individual to put forth his or her best performance, and he had no qualms about pointing out their deficiencies. Hunter seems to have been an understanding, energetic, imaginative, and open-minded teacher, administrator, and advisor. The large number of applicants (from both the U.S. and many foreign countries) for the graduate programs -- and the types of positions offered to the graduates -- imply that the Northwestern programs in radio, television, and film were widely held in high regard.
