The Robert E. Beam papers date between 1934 and 1986, fill four and one-half boxes, and are arranged in five subseries: education files, correspondence, teaching files, research and consulting files, and publications.

The Robert E. Beam papers date between 1934 and 1986, fill four and one-half boxes, and are arranged in five subseries: education files, correspondence, teaching files, research and consulting files, and publications.

In the first box of the papers are five folders of biographical materials including vitae, bibliographies, certificates, clippings, and programs.

The education files contain lecture and reading notes documenting a portion of Beam's doctoral coursework, correspondence and related materials, and two drafts of his doctoral thesis, “The Theory and Application of Tensor Analysis.”

The correspondence includes material relating to Beam's publications, consulting, and research work, his work with professional societies, various job offers, and sundry engineering matters. There is virtually no personal correspondence. General correspondence is arranged in chronological order. In 1968-1969 Beam chaired the Northwestern University Technological Institute's Deanship Recommendation Committee seeking a successor to Dean Harold B. Gotaas. Pertinent correspondence from both within and outside the university as well as the Committee's final report are included within one folder identified topically. Walter S. Owen succeeded Gotaas as Dean of the Technological Institute as of January 1, 1970.

The teaching files include lecture and background notes, syllabi, examination sheets, material concerning examination problems, and grade books. Course materials are arranged in folders sequentially by course number. Remaining materials are foldered alphabetically according to topical headings.

The research and consulting files, arranged alphabetically by topical folder headings, include correspondence and reports pertinent to Beam's work on behalf of several companies and institutions.

The publication files contain the texts of many of Beam's articles, some with related notes, and reprints. Also included are drafts of several chapters. Some of Beam's publication's originated as speeches. No material is present from the widely used textbook, Theory and Application of Microwaves, written by Beam and A.D. Bronwell. Brief publications are foldered alphabetically according to title; lengthier works including draft chapters follow as does one folder of book reviews and one of article reprints.
