The Harold Havighurst Papers fill 24 boxes and span the years 1947 to 1957. The bulk of the records consist of correspondence; statistics, membership and address lists, reports, payroll and financial information, and memos to faculty are also part of the series. The records are divided into categories according to Havighurst's original filing system.

The Alumni category includes correspondence with alumni concerning alumni meetings and banquets, as well as the Dean's correspondence about placing alumni and recent graduates with law firms and in other positions.

The American Bar Association category consists of correspondence with members of the ABA. Questionnaires and data are also included.

The Association of American Law Schools category contains a variety of materials, including memos to faculty, invitations to luncheons, and questionnaires, as well as correspondence addressing issues such as finances and fellowships.

Financial and Budget Records include much correspondence with University Administration and with individual Law School faculty/staff members. The annual Budget files include proposed and actual budgets for the year indicated, as well as correspondence and requisitions generated during the year.

The Bar Admission category includes statistics from the Bar Exam and correspondence with different bar examination boards addressing material to be covered on the exams.

The Board of Trustees category consists of minutes of the meetings of the Board of Trustees of the University. It also includes some correspondence with Board members.

The Buildings & Grounds Department category deals with the use of rooms in the School of Law, information about the use of buildings by the 5th Army, and other correspondence about the physical plant of the School.

The Centennial category contains information pertaining to Northwestern University's 1951 centennial celebration. Correspondence, lists of contributors to the centennial campaign, and arrangements for aspects of the celebration are included. The records in this category span 1949-1951.

The Chicago Bar Association category contains questionnaires, meeting minutes, and correspondence with members of the CBA.

The Class Day category contains correspondence about the annual celebration of graduates, along with other items such as the text of a speech by the mayor, and information about the members of the Order of the Coif.

The Curriculum category contains information about specific courses, as well as memos to faculty and other correspondence about curriculum matters.

The Faculty category contains correspondence with and records about faculty members. Applications for faculty and teaching associate positions are also included, as are minutes of faculty meetings.

The Foundations and Lectures category includes the records of the several foundations that supported the work of the School of Law. This subseries contains extensive information relating to the Linthicum and Rosenthal Foundations, as well as correspondence relating to the Rosenthal Lecture series and the Food Law Institute.

The Illinois State Bar Association category includes the minutes of meetings of the Committee on Legal Education, and correspondence with members of the Illinois State Bar Association.

The Law School General category contains sundry records of the School of Law, including schedules and statistics.

The Library category primarily consists of correspondence about fundraising. Some general information about the library is also included.

The President's Office category includes memos from the president to the deans, Havighurst's memos to the faculty, and other correspondence relating to the president's office and Presidents Snyder and Miller.

One folder makes up the Prosecutor's Course category, which pertains to the summer course offered to prosecuting attorneys.

The Publications category contains correspondence relating to the journals published by Northwestern University Press - the Illinois Law Review, the Journal of Criminal Law & Criminology, and the Journal of Air Law. Correspondence with the printers who produced these journals is also found in this category.

The Publicity category contains correspondence with the university's public relations office, and promotional materials distributed to college students.

Information and correspondence about Summer Sessions is included in the category so named.

The Scholarships category contains applications for scholarships, announcements of competitions and correspondence with candidates and with donors.

The Statistics category includes data about students gathered by the School of Law, as well as data from outside agencies, such as the Educational Testing Service and the United States government.

The Students category consists primarily of correspondence relating to the Junior Bar Association. Also included are the constitution and charter of the JBA.

The University Correspondence category contains correspondence with deans and administrators at other prominent law schools.

The University Senate category includes records of the Senate of Northwestern University.

The large category General Alphabetical Files contains correspondence and records that do not fit into any of the broad categories described above.
