Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The School of Speech Personnel Files consist of personnel files for faculty members. The bulk of the records postdate 1945, when more accurate records were kept. There is, however, some material dating as far back as 1897. All faculty members whose files are included in this series have either retired, resigned, or are deceased.

The folders contain vitae; correspondence between individuals and the dean, his assistants, and others; application letters and forms sometimes accompanied by college and/or high school transcripts and letters of recommendation. This material both precedes and postdates the faculty member's tenure at Northwestern, and in several cases the files include correspondence concerning deceased individuals.

In cases where graduate students were offered instructorships, their School of Speech records are also included. In cases where staff members of the Northwestern University Learning Disabilities Center became lecturers, instructors, or professors, only those portions of their records concerning their tenure as faculty members are contained within this series.

Each folder is labled with the individual faculty member's name, the chronological span of the correspondence, the starting date of his or her tenure and the ultimate rank achieved (instructor, assistant professor, associate professor, lecturer, visiting professor, or full professor). There are several women who married while teaching at Northwestern. In cases where a woman used her married name professionally, both her maiden and married names are listed, with the maiden name in parentheses. If she continued to use her maiden name professionally, some reference to that decision is generally made within the records.

The folders are arranged alphabetically by surname. The contents of each individual's folder are arranged chronologically. Faculty activity reports date from August 31 of each year. Vitae are filed either with pertinent correspondence or at the front of each folder.

Also, filed at the front of each folder are any comments or notations which were written on the original folder. This information has either been excised from the original or transcribed onto a card.

All clippings, reprints and other published materials have been transferred from this series to the University Archives Biographical Files located in Room 110. Marriage and birth announcements along with clippings not specifically related to the individual in question, have been retained in the original folder. All photographs have been removed to the Individual's Photo File under the person's name.

There are a few files in the series which require further explanation. Marjorie Gullan, for example, did not actually teach here at Northwestern. Rather, she attended a speech convention in Evanston in 1935. Subsequently, Dean Ralph Dennis approached her concerning a position on the faculty for the 1937 summer session. However, she was unable to accept. Emmit J. McHenry was the recipient of a special research grant for the study of interpersonal communication. Therefore the second file under his name contains receipts and copies of correspondence concerning this grant. Finally, Ralph Dennis' file contains correspondence concerning various students in the School of Speech, as does Clarence Simon's.

Addition 1, Boxes 9-13 Five folders of personnel files were interfiled into the alphabetical arrangement of the 1975–1979 addition to the original series. This procedure required the expansion of the additions into an additional box, hence the container list for the 1975–1979 addition had to be amended. The container list that follows includes both the 1975–1979 addition and the 1980 addition. 1980 addition folders are denoted by an asterisk.

Addition 2, Box 13 These additions include correspondence, recommendations, evaluations, vitae, and related materials pertaining to the terms of employment for several former faculty members of Northwestern University's School of Speech.

Addition 3, Box 13 These additions include correspondence, recommendations, evaluations, vitae, and related materials pertaining to the terms of employment for several former faculty members of Northwestern University's School of Speech.

Addition 4, Boxes 14-16 These additions include correspondence, recommendations, evaluations, vitae, and related materials pertaining to the terms of employment for several former faculty members of Northwestern University's School of Speech.

Addition 5, Boxes 17-20 This addition to the School of Speech personnel files include recommendations, correspondence, evaluations, vitae, a few grant proposals, and related material pertaining to the terms of employment for several former faculty members of the School. The bulk of the files date between 1980 and 1987.
