This series is comprised of English Department doctoral qualifying examinations from the period 1956-1977. Most of the examinations date between 1974 and 1977 and typically include both examination questions and candidates' written responses. Questions, prepared by English Department faculty, are tailored to the research fields and competencies of individual doctoral degree candidates. The questions and accompanying responses of each student are separately foldered. Completing the series is one folder of examination questions from the period 1956-1964. Though generally prepared for reply by specific students, these questions are unaccompanied by candidates' responses.
