Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

These records, filling thirty-three boxes, span the years from 1940 through 1984 although the bulk of the materials date between the mid-1960s and late 1970s. The records are organized into three subseries: faculty and graduate student files, administrative subject files, and departmental staffing files.

The faculty and graduate student files fill eleven boxes and date between 1940 and 1977. Each folder documents the career of either a departmental faculty member or graduate student, many of whom held Northwestern teaching appointments. The files generally include curriculum vitae, recommendations for faculty positions, and correspondence relating to salaries, teaching assignments, leaves of absence, and related administrative matters.

The administrative subject files fill almost nine boxes and span the years 1948–1984. These files document a wide variety of administrative concerns generally relating to department curriculum, committees, sponsored conferences, Evening Division and Summer Session course offerings, graduate study, and research. Correspondence between department chairs and other representatives and University administrators is also found here.

Departmental staffing files date from 1951 to 1982, the bulk of the files dating between 1978 and 1981. These records fill thirteen boxes and include correspondence and related materials pertaining to the department's efforts to hire individuals for faculty positions. Following several folders of materials concerning position availability announcements published in the American Political Science Association Newsletter, the files are arranged alphabetically in large part according to the name of teaching or research responsibilities for which a search was conducted. Within these classifications are folders of correspondence and, in many cases, folders of correspondence and other materials on individual applicants considered by the department. These latter files are arranged alphabetically according to surname of applicant; they typically include curriculum vitae, letters of recommendation, and other pertinent correspondence between applicants and departmental search committees. Several folders arranged under the heading “recruitment and placement” relate to candidates suggested to the department by academic placement bureaus.

Addition This addition to the Records of the Department of Political Science fills two and one half boxes and primarily concerns administrative aspects of the Political Science department from 1948 to 1985, with the majority of the documents dating from the 1960s and 1970s. Following the arrangement of the materials in the original series (boxes 1–33), folders in the Addition are arranged alphabetically by subject. Within the folders, materials are arranged chronologically.

An incomplete run of Annual Reports, dating between 1948 and 1983, include a small amount of correspondence pertaining to the annual reports present also. Documents pertaining to the Department's annual budget date from 1963 to 1976.

Other recurring departmental matters addressed by memos, reports, and correspondence in the Addition include the selection of new Department Chairs, the awarding of specialization certificates to Political Science undergraduates, and the planning of the Evening Division and Summer Sessions schedules. Issues related to faculty include selection,, salaries, promotions, teaching loads, and summer research grants. General Correspondence consists of letters–addressed to the Department Chair and other members of the Department–and related material, dating between 1961 and 1979. Another correspondence folder is devoted to correspondence dealing with Promotion and Reappointment committees during the years 1974–1977 and 1981–1982. A folder with the revealing title “Department Crisis” documents the need for the reorganization and the refocusing of the department in 1984. Faculty Effort Reports and their related correspondence date from 1980 to 1985; these were superseded by Personnel Activity Reports Effort Reports because of a change in US government policy related to obtaining federal money.

Records relating to the organization and implementation of graduate programs in the Political Science Department deal with the decision to implement a terminal Masters program in addition to the PhD program in the mid-1970s to the early 1980s. One folder consists of committee decisions related to the hire Robert Johansen as a professor. The Addition also includes make-up examinations and make-up exam permission forms from 1978 to 1983. One folder that differs from the mainly administrative content of this addition relates to the founding and organization of the Political Science Club from 1964 to 1966.
