Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Records of NUBIA document the foundation and major activities of a campus-based black women's group. Records, filling one box and spanning the years 1990-2001, consist of organizational documents, meeting agendas and minutes, membership lists, activities announcements and handouts, general and activities-related correspondence, and the organization's cookbook.

Organizational documents include several copies of undated mission statements and brochures. Meeting agendas and minutes record the organization's formation and development, and describe its planning process for events and activities. The general correspondence included in this group, arranged in chronological order, includes letters to University administrators (including Presidents Weber and Bienen, as well as EEO, Student Affairs, and other offices), requests for funding, correspondence with potential presenters at meetings and events, and letters from departing members of NUBIA. Accompanying documents are placed with the relevant item of correspondence.

The general activities folder in the Activities group contains announcements, handouts, and other literature from various NUBIA activities and events. Two events ("Health Issues of African-Americans" and "Juneteenth") are documented in individual folders.

The "What's Cooking" folder in the Publications group contains a draft and final version of the NUBIA cookbook.

A folder documenting the 1990 activities of the "Sister Friends-African-American Women" group at Arizona State University is of interest as a related organization that may have inspired the founding and mission of NUBIA. Toni-Marie Montgomery (Northwestern University School of Music Dean beginning in 2002), then a member of Sister-Friends, is mentioned frequently in these documents.
