Scope and Contents
The B. Claude Mathis Papers fill twenty-four boxes and span the period 1955-1990. The Papers are organized in eight categories: biographical materials, correspondence, teaching tiles, research and consulting files, Administrative files. professional organizations files, papers presented before professional organizations, and publications.
The biographical materials include appointment books (1971-1978, 1981) and programs as well as curricula vitae.
The general correspondence relates primarily to Mathis teaching, speaking, and consulting and is arranged chronologically by date. The subject correspondence deals mainly with organisational and consulting activities and is arranged alphabetically by folder title.
The teaching files include course descriptions, schedules, reading lists, and student evaluations. There is also considerable correspondence relating to practica and independent study courses.
The research and consulting files consist primarily of correspondence, notes, reports, and proposals. They are arranged alphabetically according to folder title. Of special interest are the materials documenting Mathis work with the Bush Foundation and the Lilly Endowment. Many of the consulting files relating to colleges and universities can be found in the Bush Foundation section. During the 1960s Mathis developed the computerized “College Suggestor” to aid high school students in the selection process. Reports, contracts, proposals, and correspondence relating to the “College Suggestor” are present.
The administrative files consist of correspondence, notes, and reports. They document largely Mathis involvement in committees of the General Faculty Committee, the School of Education, and the University Senate.
The professional organizations files include correspondence, program proposals and evaluations, and committee materials. The bulk of the category relates to the American Educational Research Association.
The papers presented before professional organizations files include correspondence, notes, and drafts. If the paper was later published, pertinent material is filed with the appropriate folder in the publications category. The papers are arranged alphabetically according to the paper title.
The publications category is comprised of materials relating to books and articles authored by Mathis. The files contain mainly correspondence and drafts. The files are arranged alphabetically by title within the books section and the articles section.
