George Silas Duntley Photographs, 1899-1920.
The collection is comprised of dry plate photographic negatives made during the period circa 1899-1918 by George Silas Duntley. Largely depicting people, places, and events in and around the Duntley family’s home of Bushnell, Illinois, the photographs contain revealing details of family and community life, vernacular architecture, and material culture. Also included in the collection are several photographs of Northwestern University’s Evanston campus and of its Medical School and School of Pharmacy, both located in Chicago. Northwestern University structures documented by the photographs include University Hall, Fayerweather Hall, and Lunt Hall, and the Medical School and School of Pharmacy buildings, along with the affiliated Wesley Hospital. There also are views of the Chicago neighborhood in which Duntley lived while a student, and photographs of Chicago’s Masonic Temple Building, a celebrated structure designed by the architectural firm of Burnham and Root. Noteworthy among the images are three views of Theodore Roosevelt campaigning for office from the back of a railcar while in Bushnell, Illinois.
