Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The records in this series were transferred to the University Archives from the Office of the University Attorney. They are legal abstracts of titles for property owned by Northwestern University. The abstracts are arranged according to the parcel of property they describe. Several abstracts of different dates relating to the same parcel of land have been bound together. Only the abstracts in Boxes 7-12 are identified by street address or by the name of the building or business located on the property. The remainder are identified only by Lot and Block number. Ascertaining their location requires an examination of a plat map of Cook County.

The abstracts in this series provide the following information about the properties which they describe: dimensions of the plot in feet; a complete record of conveyances which includes sales, tax sales, forfeiture, special assessments, judgments against, and the names of the various owners; and in most instances a map showing the location of the property in the context of a city block.

Itemized descriptive lists of the abstracts compiled by Gladys Williamson of the Office of the University Attorney are included with this inventory.
