The Jonathan Addleton papers are comprised of magazine and journal articles, diaries, books, an oral history and other biographical material, and reports related to Addleton’s personal and professional life. Of note are the diaries he kept, both handwritten and typescript, of his day-to-day experiences serving in Yemen, South Africa, Central Asia, Jordan, Mongolia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India. Also included is a near-complete collection of Addleton’s published works, which focus on the culture and politics of a specific country or region of the world and diplomacy, as well as editorials, book reviews, and personal writings. This collection is arranged into seven series primarily organized by the geographic location in which Addleton worked: Series 1. Biographical Materials contains books and articles written by Addleton related to his personal experiences, family, and childhood. Included is Addleton’s oral history, resume, lists of his diaries and published works, and lists of outreach efforts and events specifically related to Mongolia. This series also includes books authored or co-authored by one of Addleton’s parents. Series 2. Mongolia contains diaries, articles, and books about Mongolia and/or from Addleton’s time in Mongolia as US Ambassador or USAID mission director. It also contains books and articles on Mongolian poetry and clippings or magazines in Mongolian. Series 3. South Asia (includes Pakistan, Afghanistan, and India) contains articles related to South Asia, as well as diaries, articles, and books documenting Addleton’s service in Pakistan as USAID mission director; Afghanistan as U.S. Senior Civilian Representative; and India as USAID mission director. This series contains material in Urdu and includes Addleton’s account of his near-death experience while in Afghanistan. Related materials include Addleton’s South Africa/Pakistan diary in Series 5. Series 4. Middle East (includes Yemen and Jordan) contains articles related to the Middle East, as well as Addleton’s diaries from his service in both Yemen and Jordan as USAID program officer. Series 5. South Africa contains Addleton’s diaries from his service in South Africa as a USAID program officer, including a diary that contains entries from both his time in South Africa and in Pakistan. Series 6. Central Asia (includes Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan) contains diaries from Addleton’s service in Central Asia in the 1990s as Director of the USAID/Central Asia Program Office, and in the 2010s as USAID Central Asia Mission Director. This series also contains articles related to Central Asia. Series 7. Other Writings contains Addleton’s miscellaneous notes, articles related to diplomacy and his early career as a journalist, diaries of his personal travels (including in Europe, South Asia, Scotland, and Vermont), working papers for the “Voices of Freedom” conference, a book review written by Addleton, and an issue of The Foreign Service Journal promoting one of Addleton’s books.
