Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Steven O. Schwartz Papers are arranged in six categories: biographical materials, course files, correspondence, programs, newspaper and magazine clippings, and publications. Within categories all materials are arranged chronologically. Also included in the collection are three scrapbooks.

Biographical materials include high school and medical school transcripts, certificates, awards, conference badges, and related items.

Course files include Schwartz's 1933 general pathology thesis and his 1935 M.S. thesis, also in pathology.

Correspondence, both social and professional, is scattered and dates between 1936 and 1983.

Programs document Schwartz's appearances at professional conferences or before medical groups and other associations.

Newspaper and magazine clippings, dating from 1953 to 1969, pertain mainly to Schwartz's research on leukemia and his association with the Hektoen Institute for Medical Research. Numerous clippings concern his reporting on leukemia as a virus.

Publications include reprints and copies of Schwartz's articles on leukemia, hematology, and anemia. Also found here are two bound volumes of collected publications (Vol. 1, 1935-1949; Vol. 2, 1950-1959).

The scrapbooks contain clippings, correspondence, and some of Schwartz's earliest publications. Materials within the scrapbooks are arranged chronologically and supplement many of the other items found within the collection. The first volume dates between 1935 and 1951, the second between 1951 and 1957, and the third from 1958 to 1963.
