Stout Scores, Parts, Sketches, 1952-1997, n.d.

The Alan Stout papers fills 22 boxes and includes music scores, sheet music, performance programs, articles, press releases, publications, biographical information, correspondence, course materials, and student work created by or related to the work of Alan Stout. The collection consists of five series titled Biographical Materials, Correspondence, Music Programs and Recordings, Teaching Materials, and Music Scores and Sheet Music, the latter divided into five subseries by composer and format.

Series 1 Biographical Materials comprises all of box 1 and some of boxes 2 and 3. Folders in this box are alphabetized based on sub-category titles and include articles, press releases, and publications, general biographical information (like his faculty profile and living will), articles and publications relating to his interests outside of music, photographs and art, reading materials, and documents pertaining to his mother.

Series 2 Correspondence comprises sections of boxes 2 and 3, spans from the years of 1964-2018, and is organized chronologically. The majority of the correspondence is written by other people and sent to Stout. Some of the later correspondence is about Stout’s death in early 2018. Of note in this series is a letter written by Russian composer and pianist Dmitri Shostakovich to Alan Stout in 1974. Also included in this series are the headshots and resume of Northwestern graduate Jim Lillie along that accompany the letter he wrote to Stout, as well as a contract giving Stout permission to work on a piece written by Charles Ives.

Series 3 Music Programs and Recordings comprises the rest of box 4 with one oversized folder in box 3. This series includes music catalogues, CDs with music by students of Stout (including Augusta Read Thomas), materials relating to philanthropist Paul Fromm and the Fromm Music Foundation and programs from performances of Stout’s music dating from 1964-2001. The series is organized alphabetically, including the programs in folder 6. Note that a floppy disk is included in box 4 but no information could be pulled from the disk as of 2018.

Series 4 Teaching Materials comprises all of box 5 and spans the years 1988-1996. This series is comprised of writings by Stout’s students, mostly research papers for Masters and Doctoral degrees. The folders in this portion of the collection are organized chronologically. This series is restricted from public access.

Series 5 Music Scores and Sheet Music comprises boxes 6-22 and is further divided into five subseries: Subseries 1: Stout Bound Scores, boxes 6-10; Subseries 2: Stout Scores, Parts, and Sketches, boxes 11-17; Subseries 3: Unidentified Fragments, boxes 17-18; Subseries 4: Various Composers Published Bound Scores, boxes 19-20; and Subseries 5: Various Composers Published Scores and Parts, boxes 21-22. The materials are organized alphabetically.
