Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Milan Kubic collection fills 25 boxes, with 30.1 megabytes of born-digital files, and spans the years 1948-2017. Included are biographical materials, correspondence, photographs, floppy disks, newspaper and magazine clippings, interview transcripts, notes and research, written work, notebooks, legal-sized items, and oversized items.

The biographical materials are arranged in a rough chronological order and contain various documents between 1948-1958. This section includes records from Kubic’s stay in a German displaced persons camp, notes from his Northwestern University classes, and address books for foreign correspondents from his years working at Newsweek.

Correspondence is first grouped by topic in a rough chronological flow, and thereafter arranged alphabetically by name of correspondent. This section encompasses information on Kubic’s personal and professional life, including letters from his family and friends as well as his Newsweek colleagues. Miscellaneous business and Newsweek correspondence is grouped according to the foreign bureau at which Kubic was working when the correspondence was sent or received. This section includes letters from some prominent individuals including, among others, journalist Ben Bradlee, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, Teddy Kollek, Ehud Olmert, Senator Daniel P. Moynihan, and Vernon Walters.

Photographs in this collection capture Kubic’s personal and professional life. There are photographs of his family, as well as of interviews and travel related to Newsweek business. The photographs are arranged chronologically, with the numerous undated pictures placed last in the arrangement.

Floppy disks (1986-1995) in the collection contain 30.1 megabytes of born-digital files including writings related to the Iran-Contra Affair, writings and correspondence related to Kubic's journalism career, and drafts and writings from Kubic's autobiographical manuscript, ""A Journalist's Passage from Prague to the Promised Land".

Newspaper and magazine clippings are arranged in a broad chronology and grouped by topic. Kubic’s articles published in Newsweek and The Washington Post are grouped according to which foreign bureau he was located at when the article was published. This section also includes articles published in Spanish, French, Hebrew, and Czech.

The interview transcripts are arranged alphabetically by the name of the interviewee. This section contains transcripts between the years 1979 and 1983, when Kubic was located in Jerusalem. It includes interviews with prominent Israeli and Middle Eastern political and cultural figures such as Shulamit Aloni, Menachem Begin, Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, Meron Benvenisti, Abba Eban, Aryeh Eliav, Amos Elon, Elias Freij, Amos Oz, Mattityahu Peled, Shimon Peres, and Ezer Weizman.

Kubic’s notes and research are grouped by topic and arranged in chronological order. This section includes research and notes between 1964 and 1993. It includes research for his Newsweek stories as well as for his work for the United States Food and Drug Administration.

The written work section contains Kubic’s drafts, outlines, and story proposals between the years 1965 and 1985. Materials are grouped by story topic and arranged in chronological order. This section includes many drafts on Israeli events as well as some Brazilian ones.

Kubic’s reporter’s notebooks, numerous in volume, contain handwritten notes from interviews as well as research notes regarding stories on which he worked for Newsweek. Each notebook is labeled with the year and span of months that its content documents. The cover pages of certain notebooks also indicate the topics of its contents. These notebooks supplement materials found within other portions of the collection.

The legal-sized materials are ordered chronologically and contain materials from several other categories including biographical materials, correspondence, notes and research, interview transcripts, and written work. These include correspondence and notes/research regarding Kubic’s research on the German-published “Hitler Diaries” in 1983. The section also includes Kubic’s first piece of English journalism, the leading piece for the USAT General A.W. Greely ship newspaper.

The oversized materials are arranged chronologically and consist of scrapbooks filled with Kubic’s published Newsweek articles. The section also contains a photo album associated with Kubic’s 1964 research on the Xinguano tribe of Brazil.
