Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Tom W. Tillman Papers, documenting Tillman’s career at Northwestern University and his professional activities, fill twelve boxes, including one half-size box. The papers span the dates 1949-2000 and are arranged in broad categories: education files, correspondence, committee files, teaching files, research files, speeches/addresses/papers, and publications. These are preceded by one folder of biographical materials.

The education files consist primarily of class notes which Tillman took as a graduate student in Northwestern’s Department of Communicative Disorders.

Correspondence is divided into general correspondence and subject correspondence.

The committee files record Tillman’s participation as a member of various Northwestern University faculty committees and professional organizations. They contain correspondence to and from Tillman, meeting notes, and materials reviewed or generated by the respective committees.

The teaching files consist mainly of course syllabi, reading lists, and lecture notes.

Lecture materials are arranged in two groups: lectures within the School of Speech, and other lectures (including lectures for other parts of Northwestern University). There are also two folders of lectures Tillman gave while a member of the faculty of the University of Oklahoma.

The research files include materials relating to Tillman’s grant from the National Institutes of Health, as well as graphs and charts resulting from hearing tests administered at Northwestern.

There are three boxes of speeches, addresses, and papers. Conference dates and locations, if known, are indicated in the inventory. Within each folder, the materials are organized in the following order: correspondence, program of the conference (if available), research materials and notes, drafts, and the final version.

The publication files, consisting of article reprints and a prologue, are arranged alphabetically by title. Materials in the article reprints files are arranged chronologically by date.
