Northwestern University Human Relations Committee

 Series
Identifier: Series 1

Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

This series, filling three boxes and spanning the years 1968 to 1982, consists of three types of records relating to Professor Fredrickson's career at Northwestern University: biographical information, materials relating to Fredrickson's involvement on faculty committees, and typescripts of three of his books.

The biographical material includes curricula vitae, press releases, press clippings, book reviews, and some miscellaneous correspondence, which spans the years 1968 to 1982. Obituaries were added in 2008.

Five folders, arranged chronologically, contain materials reflecting Fredrickson's involvement as a member of the University Committee on Human Relations from 1968 through 1971 (although some of the general materials are dated as late as 1982). The first two hold memos, reports, and correspondence to and from the members of the committee. The second of these includes materials received and generated during Fredrickson's year as Chair. The third holds memos, reports and correspondence relating to the Sub-committee to Draft a Memo on Fraternities and Sororities, of which Fredrickson was a member. Two folders contain memos, newspaper clippings, reports, and other materials concerning the relationship between University administration and African-Americans, including materials relating to the issues of housing, discriminatory policies, hiring practices, conflicts between the University and the African-American community in Evanston, and the recruitment of minority students and faculty members. While most of these records relate specifically to Northwestern University, there are a few articles and clippings about other universities and institutions.

One folder holds records from Fredrickson's term as chair of the TriQuarterly Committee, 1978-1981. During this time, the magazine's editor resigned; as a result, much of the material in this folder consists of correspondence and notes relating to the search for an editor.

Also included in this series are the typescripts of three of Fredrickson's books, The Inner Civil War, The Black Image in the White Mind, and White Supremacy.
