Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Octavio da Costa Eduardo papers fill three boxes. There is one folder of sparse biographical materials including a notebook used as a diary. Eduardo's thoughts on leaving Brazil and his first impressions of the United States are recorded here. The text of his recollections is in Portuguese. The rest of the notebook was used for class notes.

A folder of correspondence spans the period 1943-1945 with most items in Portuguese. Included in the correspondence are two letters from Melville J. Herskovits pertaining to Eduardo's Brazilian research.

The bulk of the collection is comprised of lecture notes, research papers, and other materials relating to Eduardo's undergraduate and graduate study. Lecture notes are arranged in seven folders and presumably date from the period 1938-1940 when Eduardo attended the Escola Livre de Sociologia e Politica in Sao Paulo. The subjects reflected by these notes, in Portuguese, relate primarily to the fields of anthropology and sociology.

There is one folder of lecture notes from a class in sociology taught at Northwestern along with a folder of Northwestern reading lists.

Two folders of research papers and one of examinations reflect coursework undertaken at Northwestern. Class and field notes relating to Eduardo's participation in "The Problems of Negro Youth" seminar are arranged in two folders. Also included here is a handbook on psychological leads for ethnological field workers and a draft evaluation of Eduardo's experiences in the seminar.

Book notes apparently taken by Eduardo for Northwestern class assignments are undated and are arranged in eight folders. The folder labeled "Book Notes, No. 8" are not in Eduardo's handwriting and were probably given him by a colleague.

A folder of fragmentary items including a note from Herskovits and the lyrics to a Brazilian folk song complete the series.
