The Centennial Loan Exhibition of Modern Paintings, mounted during much of April, 1951, was sponsored by Northwestern's department of art and held in conjunction with the university's Centennial Celebration. The fifty-four works included in the Exhibition, by major American and European artists, were borrowed from private collections in the Chicago area and represented major stylistic developments of the twentieth century. The Exhibition ran concurrently with Northwestern's centennial conference, “The Arts in Modern Society.”
This series spans the years 1950-1951 and fills one half-size box. Included are correspondence and related materials documenting exhibition planning and scheduling, as well as loan arrangements and promotional materials.
