Alumni Biographical Files Student Grade Record Cards

 Collection
Identifier: 51/15

  • Staff Only
This series is composed of 9“xll” cards which record students' academic history during their stay at Northwestern. Each card records an individual student's name, degree (if attained), year of graduation, home address, parents' name, religous affiliation, birth date, school previously attended, and date of admission to Northwestern. It also includes the individual's courses and grades, as well as occasional annotations concerning exemptions from degree requirements and other academic matters.

These are undergraduate records, mainly from the College of Liberal Arts and the School of Music, with several from Che Schools of Engineering and Commerce, and from the Liberal Arts' summer term. The cards' format changes over time and from school to school, but the informational content remains the same. Several examples of the different forms are appended to this inventory.

The records are most extensive for students with surnames from A through M, but are very sparse from N through Z (the first forty boxes cover A through M, the last two cover N through Z.). They span from the 1870's to 1927, with the bulk of the Cards falling between 1910 and 1927. The records cover only alumni deceased as of 1977. The vast majority of grade record cards for students who attended Northwestern, particularly those whose surnames begin with N through Z, are filed with their biographical files in Series 51/1 - 51/13, and 51/15.
