Scope and Contents

The clippings have been taken mainly from a variety of Chicago and Evanston newspapers as well as Methodist denominational publications. The contents of the clippings typically concern regular and significant University events such as commencement exercises and meetings of the Northwestern Board of Trustees. Other clippings relate to class day exercises, the activities and reports of University presidents and administrators, and the visits of prominent individuals to the Northwestern campus. Finally, there are accounts of the University's early history, descriptions of the campus and its buildings, and biographical sketches of some contemporary members of the faculty.

The scrapbook measures approximately 15 × 10 × 2.5 inches and includes a collection of newspaper clippings dating between 1860 and 1895.

Method of Acquisition

Acquired originally for the Northwestern University Library, December 20, 1876. Clippings dating up through 1876 had been compiled from the collections of Northwestern professors Henry Noyes and Daniel Bonbright. Clippings dating after 1876 presumably had been gathered by members of the University Library staff.
