College of Arts and Sciences Quarterly Grade Report Summaries

The Quarterly Grade Reports record the number of each letter grade awarded and percentage of students receiving the respective letter grades in courses offered by Northwestern University's College of Arts and Sciences from 1946 to 1955, and in all undergraduate schools from 1956 to 1968. The series consists of two groups of records. The first group, spanning the period from Fall quarter of 1946 to the Fall quarter of 1955, is comprised of bound and unbound grade reports compiled by the Office of the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. The second group, compiled by the Office of the Registrar, covers the Winter quarter of 1955 through the Spring quarter of 1968.

Each report in the first group includes a summary of the grade reports by departments within the College of Arts and Sciences. For each department, the summary records the percentage of students receiving each letter grade (A, B, C, D, and F) an incomplete, or an absent. The number of students taking courses in each department is totaled in a separate column.

The number and percentage of students receiving each letter grade are subsequently recorded by departments and by individual classes (denoted by course and section number) within each department.

The second group consists of statistics selected for all undergraduate schools from one quarter each year, beginning with the winter quarter of the 1955-1956 academic year. Each grade report is preceded by a summary of numbers and percentages of grades awarded in each department in the undergraduate schools: Commerce, Education, Journalism, Liberal Arts, Music, Speech, and the Technological Institute. Statistics for individual classes are listed under each department by school.
