Records of the Citizens' Police Committee (Chicago)

This collection consists of a relatively small amount of general correspondence, meeting minutes, reports, and and other materials related to the Citizen's Police Committee. The Committee, formed in 1929, analyzed the staffing and organization of the Chicago Police Department. The Committee studied contemporary manpower and administrative issues and made recommendations for departmental reorganization based upon its study. The Committee worked with the cooperation of the Commissioner of Police, W.F. Russell, and the assent of Chicago Mayor William Hale Thompson. Prominent among the Chicago area business, academic, and community leaders who sponsored or served on the Committee were Northwestern University President Walter Dill Scott and John H. Wigmore and Frederic B. Crossley of the University's School of Law.
