Scope and Contents

The Paul Heller collection fills 8 boxes and spans the years 1934-2014. The collection is divided into four sections: personal papers, professional papers, books, and multimedia items.

The personal papers section includes Heller’s postwar identification documents and letters; correspondence with family, friends, and colleagues; various versions of Heller’s diary from the Holocaust; collections of eulogies and sympathy correspondence for Paul, his brother Erich, and other friends; articles about Heller’s war experiences; testimony and talks about Heller’s time at Buchenwald; and an autobiography of the first forty years of Heller’s life.

The professional papers section includes Heller’s diploma and medical school documents; medical journals with Heller’s notes; transcripts of Heller’s speeches; various articles authored by Heller; and information about two medical symposiums of which Heller was a part.

The books section includes thirteen books owned by Heller during his life, including some of the first books he received after his liberation from Buchenwald; a book about the journalist Edward Murrow, with whom he was close friends; a book on Buchenwald; and a medical book Heller used to study for his profession.

The multimedia section includes VHS tapes, cassette tapes, and tape reels with interviews of Heller, Erich Heller’s memorial service, Edward Murrow’s Buchenwald broadcast, and a recording of Paul Heller’s symposium in 1996.

The collection is divided into four sections: personal papers (including his Holocaust diary), professional papers (documenting his career as a physician), books, and multimedia items.
