Content Description

The Gywnne Shotwell collection includes Shotwell’s 2018 Ralph Coats Roe Medal awarded by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Established by ASME in 1972, the Ralph Coats Roe Medal is given “in recognition of a significant contribution to a better public understanding and appreciation of the engineer’s worth to contemporary society.” Shotwell received the honor for her “outstanding leadership in space commercialization; for technical contributions to the design of reusable rockets; and for dedication to the promotion of STEM education.”

ASME Executive Director Thomas Costabile presented Shotwell with the award at a special ceremony held at Northwestern University on February 28, 2019.

Abstract

Gwynne Shotwell (née Rowley) was born in Evanston, Illinois in 1963 and grew up in a nearby Chicago suburb of Libertyville. The Gywnne Shotwell collection includes Shotwell’s 2018 Ralph Coats Roe Medal awarded by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
