Records of the Northwestern University Library Exhibits Committee
Scope and Contents
These records document the activities of the Northwestern University Library Exhibits Committee. The Exhibits Committee is responsible for coordinating, scheduling, supervising and allocating funds for the planning and preparation of displays in the exhibit cases of Level 1 of the Main Library. The Committee also handles the promotion and publicity for the exhibits. Ideas for exhibits are submitted by individuals and organizations, but must be approved by the Committee. The history and mission of the organization are described in the Library's newsletter, The Lantern's Core, and in the policies and procedures memorandum #PPM 882a-882e, as well as in the annual reports. Materials span the years 1984 through 1998, but the largest concentration of records, committee meeting minutes and correspondence, falls before 1994.
Correspondence includes nominations and appointments of new committee members, correspondence with exhibitors, applications for some exhibits, and memos to committee members. Other records include membership lists, financial statements, exhibit schedules, publicity notices, exhibit handouts, and captions from exhibits. One file contains correspondence and sketches regarding the purchase of appropriate signage for the exhibit area. Also included are records of specific exhibits, such as the 1988 "Frank Lloyd Wright," 1990 "Arabic Language and Script in Africa," 1990 "Durchslas the Haggadah and History" and 1992 "Recent Gifts to the Library." Exhibits located elsewhere than the Library display cases included "Gardens of Delight" and "Schools and the Means of Education."
