Northwestern University Settlement Association Glass Transparency Slides
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of 100 glass transparency slides (3.25 x 4 inches), also known as magic lantern slides, divided into two thematic clusters, dating from the turn of the 20th century, and identified with the Northwestern University Settlement. The slides apparently were used to illustrate public programs describing activities of the Settlement as well as exploring issues of political economy. The slides from these two thematic clusters are separately boxed.
Settlement activities are reflected by slides which depict Settlement-sponsored camps and children’s activities, cultural matters, and social events.
Slides associated with political economy include text excerpts from prominent reformers such as Henry George and Robert Ingersoll; portraits of turn-of-the-century labor leaders; pertinent graphic illustrations and caricatures; and a set of cartoons, published in Puck (1887) under the title “Little Freddy Receives a Visit from His Country Cousin.” Those cartoons humorously reflect conflict between children of different backgrounds.
