Scope and Contents

The collection fills four boxes and includes papers, photographs, and scrapbooks documenting Mulholland’s professional broadcast career, time as a Stars and Stripes reporter in Korea, time at Northwestern (as a student and later a professor), and biographical material.

Box 1 contains press credentials, news clippings, scrapbooks, internal memos, speeches, and newsletters from his time at NBC, as well as news clippings from his time as a reporter in the army and newsletters and correspondence from his time as a professor at Northwestern and his retirement.

Box 2 includes programs, correspondence, and biographical materials, as well as photographs. The photos include pictures from his time as a student at NU, pictures from Mulholland’s time in the Army, where he was stationed in Korea, publicity shots of Mulholland, pictures from his time as an NU professor, and personal photographs. Materials of note include signed photos of Mulholland with Adlai Stevenson and George H. W. Bush, photographs of Mulholland with notable figures such as Johnny Carson, Jimmy Carter, Hubert Humphrey, Dean Martin, Tom Brokaw, Bob Hope, Gerald Ford and Bob Barker, and a photograph of Marie Oswald Porter, wife of Lee Harvey Oswald.

Box 3 contains one large scrapbook of news clippings of stories written by Mulholland including articles written when Mulholland was in high school, college, and the Army.

Box 4 holds courtroom drawings presented to Bob Mulholland by NBC graphic arts illustrator Gene Widhoff. The drawing in Folder 1 depicts the Navy court of inquiry which recommended that US Navy Commander Lloyd M. “Pete” Bucher be court-martialed. The drawing in Folder 2 is of Sirhan Sirhan, who was convicted of the 1968 assassination of Robert “Bobby” Kennedy. Lastly, folder three contains a drawing of Manson Family cult leader Charles Manson.

Abstract

The Robert E. “Bob” Mulholland Papers (1933-2021) spans 1950-2016 and contains four boxes of biographical and career materials documenting Mulholland’s service as a reporter in the Korean War and his broadcast news career, including his tenure as president of NBC. Select materials also cover his early reporting as a recent graduate of Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism and his later return as faculty to his alma mater.

Arrangement

The Robert E. “Bob” Mulholland Papers fill four boxes. The contents are arranged into Biographical and Professional Materials (box 1 and part of box 2), Photographs (box 2), and Oversized Materials (boxes 3 and 4). Materials in each series are arranged in roughly chronological order.

Donated in 2016 by Mulholland and Jonathan Love as accession #16-59, and in 2019 by Jonathan Love as accession #2019-112.
