Scope and Contents

The Samuel W. Jameson papers contain the thousands of articles on Asia he contributed to the Chicago tribune, Los Angeles times and other publications; correspondence; notes from interviews; and materials collected by Jameson for use in his writings. His writings principally concern Japanese current events, politics and economics; and contain varying amounts of similar information on Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Taiwan, and other Asian countries. The papers include over 3700 photographic negatives, over 3600 prints from those negatives, hundreds of color slides, and digital images. An important segment of these photographs are the images taken during Jameson’s trips to Vietnam and other countries in Southeast Asia in the 1960s.The papers also contain several hundred sound recordings, chiefly of speeches by Japanese politicians, government officials and business executives. The Jameson papers are an important resource for the study of Asian (especially Japanese) politics, economics and history.

Arrangement

The arrangement of the Jameson papers into a number of series reflects the general arrangement of the materials as found at the time of processing. The Jameson papers are arranged in the following series:

  • Biographical and personal materials: Information on Jameson’s life, education, and family. This series includes information on Jameson’s journalism career before joining the Chicago tribune, and his time in the U.S. Army. An important resource in this series are Jameson’s passport, which provide details of his travels in Asia
  • Correspondence and messages: material sent to and from Jameson, both through the mails and electronically
  • Clippings: Jameson’s scrapbooks of his writings for the Chicago tribune, Los Angeles times and other publications. The scrapbooks also contain occasional photographs and other items
  • Dispatches: News stories written by Jameson, as transmitted to for the Chicago tribune or Los Angeles times. Chiefly typescripts or wire-service printouts
  • Notes: Spiral-bound notebooks with Jameson’s notes from interviews, and other observations
  • Subject files: These alphabetically-arranged folders contain mixtures of Jameson’s notes (chiefly from interviews with politicians, officials and business executives), articles by Jameson and others, texts of presentations, correspondence, and other materials
  • Visual materials: Photographs and slides taken by Jameson and others. The photographs are arranged, to the extent possible, in chronological order
  • Media: Audiocassette recordings of speeches by politicians, executives and others (often to the Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan, or the Japan National Press Club), news conferences and interviews.
