Scope and Contents
These records are arranged in twelve boxes and date between ca. 1921 and ca. 1945. Included are files on applicants for study, both undergraduate and graduate, in the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. Records on each individual consist typically of a completed admission application form often accompanied by related materials such as scholarship and fellowship applications, transcripts of coursework completed at other institutions or other schools at Northwestern, letters of recommendation, correspondence, and occasional essays. Changing over the date span of the records are the categories of information represented on the application form. Generally recorded are an individual's name, address, birth date, and general information concerning parents and academic experience at undergraduate and/or secondary schools. Often recorded is information on an applicant's work experience, finances, race, nationality, denomination, and physical characteristics. Photographs of applicants are sometimes included.
