Eta Sigma Phi (Beta Chapter) Records
Scope and Contents
This series consists of the surviving records of the Beta Chapter of Eta Sigma Phi.
The bulk of the records concern the activities of the Beta Chapter in the years 1950-1960. Earlier material consists of the 1927 Ritual and Constitution. Material after 1960 consists of national Eta Sigma Phi minutes and the newsletter of Eta Sigma Phi, Nuntius.
The records include: material relating to the Eta Sigma Phi constitution, by-laws and rituals; minutes (local and national), programs; projects; contests; correspondence; membership certificates and lists; financial statements; and national news letters.
Materials relating to the constitution include: a copy of the Ritual and Constitution (1927), a copy of the 1927 Constitution with tentative revisions, the revised (1953) Constitution, duties of officers and committees, national ritual revisions, and a revised ritual prepared for Gamma Rho Chapter at Hope College. An historical sketch of both the Beta Chapter and Eta Sigma Phi is included with this material.
Minutes of only four meetings of the Beta Chapter have survived, as well as an outline of May 1954 meetings. Also present are national Eta Sigma Phi minutes from 1952 to 1962.
The records also contain programs of national conventions (1954-1957), including rough drafts of the program of the 1957 convention hosted by the Beta Chapter. There is also a report on the 1955 national contest, the application form and essay of a Beta Chapter member for the 1960 Eta Sigma Phi contests and a list of national awards for 1960.
The correspondence is primarily that of Professor Grundy Steiner, faculty advisor to the Beta Chapter from 1950-1960. Much of Steiner's correspondence was with Executive Secretaries of Eta Sigma Phi, including W.C. Korfmacher (1950), G.W. Regenos (1952, 1954), and H.R. Butts (1955-1959).
Also included are membership rosters (1950-1960), annual membership and mailing lists, and copies of national questionaires
Financial statements and receipts are incomplete. Thirty-four of the sixty issues of Nuntius from 1952-1966 are present.
