Scope and Contents

The Records of the Associate Deans for Academic Affairs of the Kellogg Graduate School of Management fill twenty-three boxes, and span the years 1965 to 1985, with the bulk of the series covering the years 1972-1983. The records reflect the two-year rotation schedule established in 1976, in that they incorporate records of Deans Duncan, Kamien, and Jurius, into one body of records. This series also includes some records dating to Dean Westfall's term. The records are organized into three broad categories: topical files, grants and research, and reading files.

The topical files span the years 1965 to 1982. This category consists of correspondence relating to the academic departments, support service departments, faculty committees, and the various programs adopted by Kellogg. Also included in this category are records of faculty meetings, faculty memos, course and instructor evaluations, and faculty reports.

The grants and research category, spanning the years 1975 to 1979, contains research grant proposals, grants funded, grants pending, grants refused, and inactive grants. Also included in this category are research memos and research policy memos.

The reading files document the day-to-day administration of the office of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. They span the years 1974 to 1980, and consist mainly of the four Associate Deans' correspondence.

Description of the Addition: This addition to the records of the associate deans' of academic affairs of Kellogg Graduate School of Management, consists of ten boxes, and spans the years 1954 to 1995, with the bulk covering the years 1972-1992. The records are divided into two subseries; correspondence and faculty review.

The correspondence subseries is divided into four categories, and each category is arranged chronologically within each folder. The correspondence categories are external correspondence, which comprise of correspondence generated outside of Kellogg, internal correspondence, which comprise of correspondence generated within Kellogg, central administration correspondence, which consists of correspondence relating to the academic administration of Kellogg and general correspondence, which relates to no specific matters.

The faculty review subseries consists of nine departments, and is arranged alphabetically within each department. This subseries consists of biographical data of the faculty, individual publications of faculty member, and academic qualifications. Also included in this category are the faculty review form and criteria for evaluation of competence for faculty members.

Abstract

The office of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at Northwestern University was created to oversee directly and strengthen the quality of instruction administered by the faculty of the Kellogg Graduate School of Management. KGSM Dean Donald P. Jacobs proposed that the office of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs be held for a two-year term on a rotation basis. These records fill twenty-three boxes, and span the years 1965 to 1985. The bulk of the records reflect the two-year rotation schedule established in 1976, in that they incorporate records of Deans Duncan, Kamien, and Jurius, into one body of records.

Arrangement

The records are organized into three broad categories: topical files (arranged alphabetically by subject, and chronologically within each folder ), grants and research (subdivided into seven sections, and is arranged alphabetically within each section), and reading files (arranged chronologically). In the addition, correspondence is divided into four chronologically-arranged categories, and alphabetically-arranged departmental reviews.

Method of Acquisition

This series was transferred to the University Archives from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management by Pat Alexander, and the secretary of KGSM, Stuart Greenbaum on July 26, 1989, as Accession Number 89 - 132. The additions to the records of the deans' of academic affairs of Kellogg graduate school of management were transferred to the University Archives by Sally Luczak as Accession number 98-203 on November 3, 1998.

Separated Materials

Three quarters of a cubic foot of extraneous and duplicate material was discarded. One inch thick of duplicate and extraneous material was discarded from the addition.
