Scope and Contents

The series, arranged in twenty six boxes, is comprised of the administrative records of Robert L. Church, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, School of Education, 1974-1979. The bulk of the records date from 1974 to 1979 and document Church's deanship at the School of Education. A small amount of materials relate to Church's position as faculty member of the School of Education (1970-1974) prior to becoming the associate dean. A very small amount of records in the series are from his predecessor, Dean James Neal (1965-1974). Some correspondence dates from Church's tenure as dean of the summer session, 1979-1980. These relate to his involvement in committees of the School of Education.

The School of Education's associate dean for academic affairs is responsible administratively for the School's degree programs. Program development, financial aid, graduate student admissions, student recruitment, and faculty assignments all fall under the purview of the office. Among the associate dean's chief responsibilities is coordination of teacher certification policies and programs for the entire University. The associate dean serves also as the School of Education's liaison with the University's Graduate School.

The activities of the associate dean are documented in five subseries of records: general correspondence, committees, projects and studies, general administrative files, and professional organizations. The general correspondence is comprised of Church's letters with the Northwestern faculty, staff, students, and administrators, as well as with colleagues from outside the university.
