Scope and Contents

The Northwestern University Law School Newsletter Records fill one box and span the years 1917-1919 and 1942-1946. Correspondence between the editor of the newsletter and U.S. servicemen during the Second World War is also included in the series. There are also lists of Northwestern Law students and alumni in the U.S. military.

Also included are letters sent to and from the Monastery Hill Bindery concerning the creation of an album dedicated to Northwestern Law School students and alumni who served in the Second World War. Correspondence with the Office of Censorship in Washington, D.C., is also included.

The lists of Northwestern Law School graduates and students in the service are from the Second World War only. The lists, compiled by the editor of the newsletter, span the years 1941-1946. Included with the lists are newspaper obituaries of servicemen killed and lists of the Northwestern Law School students returning from service in 1946.

Addition, Boxes 2-4 The addition consists of three archival boxes, containing correspondence between the editor of the Northwestern University Law School Newsletter and U.S. servicemen during the Second World War, spanning the years 1941-1946. Letters are arranged in chronological order. Correspondence with families of servicemen is also included.

Two additional folders are included: one of undated correspondence and one of newspaper clippings related to the aforementioned servicemen. These also span 1941-1946

Abstract

The Northwestern University Law School Newsletter was first published during the First World War and sent to students and alumni in the military. With the advent of the Second World War, the newsletter was resurrected and sent to hundreds of Northwestern Law School alumni and students serving in the military. In addition to the newsletters, the Northwestern University Law School Newsletter Records include correspondence between the editor of the newsletter and U.S. servicemen during the Second World War; lists of Northwestern Law students and alumni in the U.S. military; and newspaper clippings related to the aforementioned servicemen.

Arrangement Note

The newsletters are arranged in chronological order of publication.

The correspondence with the editor, spanning the years 1941-1946, is arranged in chronological order by date.

The lists of Northwestern Law School graduates and students are arranged in chronological order.

Method of Acquisition

These records were transferred to the University Archives on February 26, 1997 as Accession 97-18.

Separated Materials

Four archival boxes of duplicate and extraneous material were discarded. Copies of newspapers (including Stars and Stripes, Yank and others) were sent to the Library's Special Collections Department.
