Scope and Contents

The photographs in this series document the Northwestern University Settlement Association from 1890 — 1991. Prints as well as safety film negatives are included. This collection includes many of the photographs that appear in The Worn Doorstep by Mark Wukas. The photographs in box 4 and box 8 labeled “1991 Book Pictures” may have been considered for inclusion in the Wukas book.

Box 7 contains photographs from the family of Helen Loth Blomgren Rachwalski. Safety film negatives are included with the prints.

Oversized (larger than 8"x10") photographs are contained in box 8. Folders 5 and 6 hold portraits of Harriet Vittum and Helen Rachwalski.

Abstract

Arrangement Note

The photographs in this series are organized either alphabetically by subject or chronologically by year. Boxes 1-4 contain photographs arranged by subject. Boxes 4-6 contain photographs arranged by year. Many of the photographs in this series are not labeled or dated. Unidentified photographs are arranged by format (i.e. size) in Box 4. Box 8 is organized by subject when identified, with other photographs arranged by year when possible.

Method of Acquisition

These photographs were separated from Accession #90-160, donated to the University Archives by the Northwestern University Settlement via Executive Director Ron Manderschied and Doris Overboe on October 15, 1990.

Related Materials

The records' original arrangement, in alphabetical order by subject, was retained, but several large, coherent categories were separated from the General Administrative Files, organized separately, and assigned their own series numbers.

Separated Materials

Nitrate negatives were digitized in 2021 and can be found via the University Archives Nitrate Negative Collection (75/0/5).

Cardboard backings which had become detached from some photographs in Box 8 were disposed of.
