Scope and Contents

The records of the Faculty Planning Committee spanning the years 1963-1980 comprise six boxes. They consist primarily of memoranda, correspondence, notes, and committee reports. Minutes of the FPC apparently were not regularly distributed and few exist in the records, with the exception of those for the years 1976-1978. The bulk of the records document the FPC's work during the chairmanship of Jean Hagstrum (1966-1969), with substantial bodies of records also present for the chairmanships of Clarence Ver Steeg (1962-1965), Daniel Zelinsky (1974-1975), and Paul Loach (1976-1978). The records include the Committee's annual reports to the Provost, as well as drafts and final version of the FPC's six major reports to the University community. Published copies of A Community of Scholars: New Approaches to Undergraduate Education at Northwestern (Part I, September 1968), Community of Scholars: New Educational Programs for Northwestern University (Part II, October, 1969), and Research, Teaching, and University Goals (March, 1979) are shelved in Room 110.

The records include material from all the terms of office save those of David Mintzer (1969-1970) and Robert Lineberry (1980- ). Small amounts of material document the tenures of Ali Bulent Cambell (1965-1966), David Reiter (1970-1972), James Sheehan (1972-1973), and Hugo Sonnenschein (1975-1976). David Baron's tenure (1978-1980) is represented only by two reports on the University in the 1980s.

The ten folders documenting Ver Steeg's chairmanship include committee files, clippings, and various drafts of the FPC's 1965 report on space utilization.

The thirty eight folders comprising the record of Hagstrum's chairmanship constitute over half of the series. In addition to general committee files they include materials relating to many of the various subcommittees that the FPC created to research and write the various sections of its report, A Community of Scholars (popularly referred to as the "Hagstrum Report"), drafts of the report, and a typescript of the final report.

The five folders documenting Zelinsky's tenure as chairman include committee files, departmental responses to an FPC questionnaire entitled "A Survey of Graduate Student Policies," and a copy of the Committee's report on the graduate program.

The eight folders covering Loach's chairmanship include the only significant run of FPC minutes in the series. In addition there are general committee files that include correspondence and committee reports.

Abstract

The Faculty Planning Committee was created in 1962. The Committee was charged with providing guidance concerning the long-range physical and intellectual development of the University. It was requested to make specific recommendations on how to balance the demands of competing intellectual disciplines for space. The records of the Faculty Planning Committee consist primarily of memoranda, correspondence, notes, and committee reports. The records include the Committee's annual reports to the Provost, as well as drafts and final version of the FPC's six major reports to the University community.

Arrangement Note

The arrangement of the records reflects the terms of office of its chairmen. Material documenting the tenures of Clarence Ver Steeg (1962-1965), Jean Hagstrum (1966-1969), Daniel Zelinsky (1974-1975), and Paul Loach (1976-1978) are each arranged by document type (committee files, correspondence, reports) and chronologically within folders, with the exception of survey responses from Zelinsky's tenure, which are arranged alphabetically by department or school name. Material documenting the tenures of Ali Bulent Cambell (1965-1966), David Reiter (1970-1972), James Sheehan (1972-1973), and Hugo Sonnenschein (1975-1976) are arranged chronologically.

Method of Acquisition

The Faculty Planning Committee Records came to the University Archives in several installments. A portion were donated by Ben Jacobsen on November 28, 1978 (Acc. #78-133). Additional records were separated from the Daniel Zelinsky Papers donated to the Archives on September 27, 1979 (Acc. #79-182). The bulk of the records were separated from the Jean Hagstrum Papers, Series 11/2/11/7, donated to the Archives on April 3, 1979, May 22, 1979, and June 8, 1981 (Acc. #'s 79-49, 79-89, 81-129). In addition a small amount of Faculty Planning Committee miscellany from the Archives general files was incorporated into the series.
