Scope and Contents
The School of Music Grade and Lesson Reports comprise 17 boxes of official forms submitted to record either grades or lessons taken by School of Music students, 1922-1959. Any hand-written or typed addendum reports handed in by a teacher are also included, as well as an occasional short letter or note written about a particular student. Beginning in the Fall of 1942 the school changed from semesters to quarters, with each being called both Fall or 1st, Winter or 2nd, and Spring or 3rd quarters until Fall 1946 when they were just called Fall, Winter and Spring quarters. Summer courses were called Summer Session until 1945 when it became Summer Quarter.
The Grade Reports, in some cases, record all courses taken by music students during a given semester or quarter in both the School of Music and other schools in the university. These are not necessarily in alphabetical order, with some being in order by school and/or by course number.
The Lesson Reports are for music lessons only. These reports record how many lessons were to be given during the quarter or semester and how many were actually taken by each student. These are in alphabetical order by the instructor's last name. Lesson Reports for the Preparatory Department (i.e. high school students) are included from 1940 through 1959. There are no grade reports for preparatory students.
