Franklin D. Scott (1901-1994) Papers

The Franklin D. Scott Papers, spanning the years from 1923 through 1982, comprise eight boxes and are arranged in six sub-series: biographical materials, correspondence, teaching materials, meetings materials, speeches, and writings.

Biographical materials, arranged in seven folders, include curricula vitae, bibliographies, newspaper clippings, press releases, ephemera, and correspondence pertaining to a festschrift published in Scott's honor as well as a fifteen-page typescript, "Some Reminiscences of the Northwestern History Department in the Years 1935-1942."

Correspondence is arranged in both general and subject categories. General correspondence spans the period 1927-1981 and pertains mainly to Scott's publications. Subject correspondence mainly concerns manuscripts read and critiqued by Scott for various publishers as well as some of Scott's own publications including World Migration in Modern Times. A few folders dealing with grant proposals and Scott's consulting work on educational audiovisuals also are located here.

The teaching materials, dating from 1934 to 1965 and filling about two boxes, pertain mainly to the major courses Scott taught at Northwestern: Europe in the twentieth century and the expansion of Europe from ancient to modern times. Much of the teaching materials are in the form of rough notes for lectures although occasional exam sheets, class schedules, reading lists, and student papers also are included. A few folders from Scott's courses at Superior State Teacher's College also may be found here and are located at the front of the sub-series. The Northwestern teaching materials are arranged in folders sequentially according to course number and chronologically within folders.

The meetings materials are devoted primarily to the meetings at which Scott served as moderator rather than speaker. These folders include correspondence with speakers and notes on their manuscripts. Scott served as program chairman for the annual meeting of the American Historical Association held in Chicago in 1959; correspondence, notes, and drafts of meeting schedules pertaining to the meeting are located here.

The speeches include notes and texts for Scott's addresses as well as correspondence relating to his speaking engagements. Scott presented most of these speeches before scholarly organizations although a few were delivered to lay and business groups.

The writings sub-series fills more than three boxes and consists mainly of drafts of articles for encyclopedias and journals, related correspondence and notes, reviews, the annotated typescript of Scandinavia, and correspondence concerning The American Experience of Swedish Students.

Addition 1, Box 9

This two-folder addition consists of correspondence of Franklin D. Scott concerning a festschrift for Leland Henry Carlson (1971-1976), and of correspondence with Gray Boyce (1954-1977).

Addition 2, Boxes 10-11

This addition to the Franklin D. Scott Papers fills two boxes. The addition consists of correspondence, class syllabi, a speech, publications, and material relating to organizations which Scott belonged.

The bulk of the addition is comprised of correspondence, divided into two categories: general correspondence, arranged chronologically by date, and subject correspondence, arranged alphabetically by folder title and chronologically by date within folders. The subject correspondence forms the majority of the correspondence and is mainly with Scott's colleagues.

One folder contains syllabi from classes that Scott taught at Northwestern.

Scott's speech, "Where is Sweden heading" was delivered in 1984 at a conference sponsored by the Swedish Information Service.

Four folders contain Scott's publications concerning subjects such as Scandinavia and Scandinavian immigration to America. The Baltic Study Conference and the Advancement of Scandinavian Study were organizations for which Scott chaired panels at and gave keynote addresses at their meeting.
