Scope and Contents
The Mattie May Gray Papers date between 1907 and 1919 and fill two boxes. Most of the papers consist of course work from Northwestern University and New Lisbon High School. One folder contains handwritten copies of poems and plays. Course work includes assignments, notes, exams and term papers from classes in history, physics, arithmetic, economics, botany, English, German and zoology, as well as one folder of miscellaneous exams. Class notes include notes taken on loose pages and in bound composition books. The personal papers consist of a Recognition of Membership certificate from the Phi Beta Sorority dated 1917, correspondence to a classmate, and a handwritten diary of Mattie's daily activities.

Arrangement Note
Since most of the papers are not dated, folders are arranged in a rough chronological order by year and, in the case of undated material, alphabetically by course title. Personal papers are located at the end of the collection.
Method of Acquisition
This collection was received from an anonymous donor on October 9, 1992 as accession #92-131.
Separated Materials
One-fourth cubic foot of extraneous material was discarded. A photographic print of Mattie Gray was transferred to the University Archives photograph collection. General items relating to Northwestern were removed and added to the general files. Six books were transferred to the Northwestern University Library Special Collections.
