Scope and Contents

The Records of Northwestern University's Associated Student Government are contained in 31 boxes. The original collection spans the years 1969 to 1998; several additions extend the coverage to 2007. The bulk of the records consist of Senate legislation and minutes, as well as the work of smaller committees. The records are divided into several subseries: Organic Documents, Legislation, Minutes and Agendas, Membership Records, Committees.

Organic Documents, spanning the years 1971 to 1998, include basic information about the workings of the Associated Student Government. Constitutions and Bylaws illuminate the rules of the organization, and the Senate Information Packets give detailed information about how the Senate operates, how funding is allocated to student groups, and how committees are formed. Election Material shows how prospective student representatives run for positions within the Associated Student Government.

Legislation spans the years 1969 to 1998 features the bills and resolutions created by student senators, and is especially relevant because it provides a vivid picture of how students shape their environment at Northwestern University.

Minutes and Agendas, also dating from 1969 to 1998, give insight into the structure of the Associated Student Government meetings. This subseries includes the records of the Senate proceedings for the span of ASG's existence.

Membership Records lists students who served in the Associated Student Government from 1977 to 1999.

Committee Records, spanning the years 1970 to 1998, shed light on what student representatives do when they are not in Senate sessions. Of special interest here is the Student Activities Funding Board, important for its powers of the student purse strings.
