Scope and Contents

The McLean Stevenson Papers fill two boxes and are primarily from the 1970s and 1980s. Box 1 contains typed and handwritten lyrics and handwritten music scores (and various copies of both), that were likely used during Stevenson’s appearances on Johnny Carson’s The Tonight Show. Box 2 contains two songbooks.

The scores are for the songs "For Once in my Life", "L­O­V­E", "McLean’s Theme", and "My Kind of Girl," and include parts for piano, saxophone, bass, drums, trombone, guitar, trumpet, and voice.

Abstract

Actor and Northwestern University alumnus McLean Stevenson, best known for his role as Lt. Colonel Henry Blake on the TV show M*A*S*H from 1972­-75, often served as guest host on The Tonight Show. This collection contains sheet music, lyrics, and songbooks from his guest host appearances.

Arrangement

Following biogrpahical materials and a folder of materials related to The Tonight Show., the materials are arranged aphabetically by folder caption.

Method of Acquisition

This collection was donated to the Northwestern University Archives by Ginny Stevenson as Accession #14-14 on January 9, 2014.
