Scope and Contents

These records comprise the administrative, consulting, publications, and speeches files of the dean of the School of Education, B.J. Chandler. While the records span the years from 1953 through 1978, they mainly cover the years between 1963 and 1978, during Chandler's tenure as dean. The records include the following subseries: general correspondence; assistant dean's files; administrative subject files; planning and development files pertaining to the School of Education Building; consulting files concerning school superintendencies, school surveys and site visits; books and articles; and speeches.

The general correspondence, comprising three boxes, spans the period 1960-1977 and is arranged chronologically. It is mainly administrative in nature and includes letters between Chandler and other university administrators, faculty, and School of Education personnel. Some of the dean's professional correspondence with colleagues in academic circles and government is also found here.

The assistant dean's files, filling one box, spans the years from 1961 through 1966 although their bulk falls into the period 1963-1966. The files include correspondence documenting routine administrative affairs of the School, particularly with regard to student registrations and course-work. Correspondence is filed in folders arranged alphabetically according to the surname of correspondents. Within folders arrangement is chronological.

Subject files constitute the largest subseries, comprising over twelve boxes and spanning the period 1959-1977. The files reflect the many administrative, official, and professional responsibilities of the dean. They document the work of the School of Education faculty, School committees, curricular offerings, student affairs, alumni programs, and relations between the School and local school districts, as well as Chandler's service on university committees and in local and national educational organizations. The files also include materials pertaining to the School's accreditation and conferences it sponsored. The files should be consulted in conjunction with the general correspondence in order to gain a more complete view of School activities. Files are arranged alphabetically by folder title. Materials within folders are arranged chronologically.

The School of Education Building planning and development files fill nearly two boxes and date from 1964 through 1972.

These files document planning and design considerations involved in construction of the School of Education Building, now Andersen Hall, completed in 1973. They include correspondence, a number of reports from various School planning committees and the university's Department of Planning, building programs of requirements, and specifications for interior furnishings. Also included are correspondence, proposals, and budget work sheets relating to construction of the proposed Northwestern University Regional Educational Research Center. The plans for this Center, never funded, called for a research and teaching facility similar to the one later realized in the School of Education Building.

Dean Chandler served as a consultant to a number of school districts and educational institutions across the nation.

His consulting files are divided into superintendencies, surveys and site visits categories. Comprising approximately three boxes they span the years from 1963 through 1978. Typically these files include correspondence, reports, occasional expense statements and clippings pertaining to work performed on behalf of individual districts or institutions. The files are arranged alphabetically according to name of school district or institution. Materials within folders are arranged chronologically.

Materials relating to books and articles files fill over one box and date from between 1953 and 1978. They include mainly drafts and copies of many articles Chandler wrote concerning educational policy and related developments. Also included is one folder of correspondence between Chandler and representatives of Dodd, Mead & Company, publisher of three of his books, Education and the Teacher (1961) Education in Urban Society (1967), and Education and the New Teacher (1971).

The Dodd, Mead & Company correspondence is arranged chronologically at the beginning of the subseries, followed by the files pertaining to articles which are individually foldered and arranged alphabetically according to the title.

Materials relating to speeches constitute nearly three boxes and span the period from 1955 through 1978. These files include copies of Chandler's speeches, occasionally drafts, and sometimes correspondence pertaining to his speaking engagements. The speeches range over a wide variety of subjects but mainly concern topics in educational administration and policy. The speeches are arranged alphabetically according to title.

Addition : Correspondence and related materials and a copy of one speech have been separated from Accession #83-29, Records of the Department of University Relations, and added to the series. The additions are foldered and labeled as follows: Box 13, Folder 14a; Box 14, Folder 9a; and Box 25, folder 5a.
