Scope and Contents

This series, filling four boxes, is comprised primarily of tournament records kept by Directors of Forensics David Zerefsky (1971–75) and Thomas Goodnight (1976–1984). The records span the years 1956–1987, with the bulk falling between 1968 and 1978. Included are correspondence, invitations and confirmations, entry forms and cancellations, programs, press releases, team cards, tournament tabulation and results, tournament news, schedules and some planning checklists. Also included are schematics for arranging the contests, and timekeeping and judging information. Many folders are missing records for various years. The programs range from 1956–1987, but are missing for 1957, 1977, 1985, and 1986. Team cards list who each team competed against for the first eight rounds as well as the results.

Folders are arranged alphabetically by subject while the contents of the folders are arranged chronologically. Undated materials are filed at the back of each folder. The entry forms, registration forms, and team cards are arranged alphabetically by the name of the competing school. Alphabetization is consistent with other lists within the records, so that UCLA is filed under “U” and University of California at Santa Barbara is filed under “S.”

Abstract

Northwestern University has sponsored an inter-collegiate debate tournament since 1872. The tournament was renamed the Owen L. Coon Memorial Debate Tournament around 1957, after the Owen L. Coon Foundation began sponsoring it. Coon was an alumnus of Northwestern and a member of the University's Board of Trustees. This series, filling four boxes, is comprised primarily of tournament records kept by David Zerefsky and Thomas Goodnight. Included are correspondence, invitations and confirmations, entry forms and cancellations, programs, press releases, team cards, tournament tabulation and results, tournament news, schedules and some planning checklists. Also included are schematics for arranging the contests, and timekeeping and judging information.

Arrangement Note

Folders are arranged alphabetically by subject while the contents of the folders are arranged chronologically. Undated materials are filed at the back of each folder. The entry forms, registration forms, and team cards are arranged alphabetically by the name of the competing school. Alphabetization is consistent with other lists within the records, so that UCLA is filed under “U” and University of California at Santa Barbara is filed under “S.”
