Abstract

Richard Christian was co-founder of Burson-Marsteller, one of the most successful public relations companies in the world. He served as associate dean and professor of advertising at Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism and as associate dean of administration and external relations at Northwestern's Kellogg Graduate School of Management. This collection fills 28 boxes and spans the years from 1951 through 1999. It contains biographical materials, professional files relating to Marsteller and to Northwestern University, speeches, photographs, awards, certificates, plaques and scrapbooks.

Arrangement Note

Biographical materials (three boxes) span the years 1960 through 1993 and contain awards, certificates, organizational membership information and plaques. Folders are arranged in alphabetical order according to topical headings.

General professional files (four boxes) contain mainly materials relating to advertising agencies and associations, general advertising matters and marketing. These files also include clippings, correspondence, publications and related materials. This subseries span the years 1951 to 1999; folders are arranged in alphabetical order according to topical headings.

Marsteller files (one box) contain mainly correspondence, corporate positioning material, press releases, and clippings and brochures relating to the company's affiliation with Young & Rubicam. This subseries span the years 1956 through 1998. Folders are arranged in alphabetical order according to topical headings.

Northwestern University files (one box) span the years 1956 to 1997.This subseries contains brochures and event programs, evening course teaching materials, a management course catalog, and Walter Dill Scott Fund materials. Folders are arranged in alphabetical order according to topical headings.

Speeches (three boxes) span the years 1953 through 1992. Speeches are arranged individually in folders in chronological order. Undated speeches are arranged at the end of the run.

Photographs, photographic contact sheets and negatives (one legal size box) span the years1963 through 1993. Photographs are organized in broad categories with folders arranged alphabetically by heading.

Oversized certificates and plaques (one drop front box) span the years 1947 through 1993. Items are arranged chronologically.

Oversized awards, certificates, one photograph, and posters (one drop front box) span the years 1955 through 1982. Hens are arranged chronologically.

Scrapbooks (ten drop front boxes) span the years 1952 through 1986. The scrapbooks feature photographs, press clippings, and speeches relating to Christian's professional career. The scrapbooks are arranged in chronological order.
